Privacy Policy — Chrome Audio Recorder

Effective date: August 2, 2026

Chrome Audio Recorder (“the Extension”, “we”, “our”, or “us”) is a Chrome browser extension that lets you record audio from a browser tab, record microphone audio, save recordings locally, and optionally edit them in the built-in Audio Studio Editor.

This Privacy Policy explains what data the Extension handles, how it’s used, where it’s stored, and the choices you have.

Summary

Chrome Audio Recorder is designed to work locally on your device. In short:

  • We do not sell your data.
  • We do not use your data for advertising.
  • We do not use your data for tracking.
  • We do not upload your recordings to our servers.
  • We do not share your recordings with third parties.
  • We do not collect browsing history, cookies, passwords, account credentials, payment information, or personal messages.

Your recordings and related data stay on your device unless you choose to share, move, upload, or delete those files yourself.

1. Single purpose of the Extension

The single purpose of Chrome Audio Recorder is to let you record, save, manage, and edit audio from browser tabs and microphone input.

Its features include:

  • Recording audio from the active browser tab.
  • Recording voice or other microphone input.
  • Saving recordings to your Downloads folder.
  • Showing recent recordings inside the Extension.
  • Opening saved recordings from Chrome Downloads.
  • Editing audio in the built-in Audio Studio Editor.
  • Exporting edited audio files.
  • Configuring recording format, filename behavior, and auto-stop duration.

2. Data the Extension handles

The Extension handles the following types of data only when needed for its user-facing features.

Audio data

The Extension may process:

  • Audio from the active browser tab when you start a tab recording.
  • Audio from your microphone when you start a voice recording.
  • Audio files you open or add to the Audio Studio Editor.
  • Edited audio output created inside the Audio Studio Editor.

This audio is used only to record, save, play, edit, or export audio as requested by you.

Recording metadata

The Extension may store limited metadata about recent recordings, such as the file name, display name, recording type (tab or microphone), audio format (MP4, WEBM, or MP3), duration, creation date, and the Chrome download ID used to reopen or reveal the saved file.

This metadata is used to display your recent recordings and provide actions such as play, edit, or show in folder.

User settings

The Extension may store your preferred recording format, filename template, custom filename prefix (if you use one), auto-stop timer preference, and other local preferences — used only to remember your choices.

Tab information used for filename generation

If you choose a filename template that includes the tab title, the Extension may use the current tab title to generate a recording filename. It does not collect your browsing history — it only uses the active tab information needed for the recording action you initiated.

Locally stored editor data

To support the Audio Studio Editor, the Extension may keep a local copy of a recording or imported audio file in browser storage such as IndexedDB, so the editor can reopen or process audio files locally. This data remains on your device and is not uploaded by the Extension.

3. Data we do not collect

Chrome Audio Recorder does not collect:

  • Names, email addresses, or account profiles.
  • Passwords or authentication credentials.
  • Cookies.
  • Full browsing history or search history.
  • Financial or payment information.
  • Health information.
  • Location data.
  • Personal communications.
  • Analytics for advertising.
  • Audio content for remote processing.
  • Data for profiling or behavioral advertising.

4. How data is used

The Extension uses data only to provide its audio recording and editing features — to:

  • Capture tab audio when you click record.
  • Capture microphone audio when you choose voice recording.
  • Save recordings to your Downloads folder.
  • Display recent recordings.
  • Open a saved recording, or reveal it in your system file location.
  • Edit audio locally in the Audio Studio Editor.
  • Export an edited audio file.
  • Remember your settings.
  • Stop recording automatically when the configured timer ends.

5. Where data is stored

Chrome Audio Recorder stores data locally on your device:

  • Recordings are saved to Downloads / Chrome Audio Captures.
  • Recent recording metadata and settings are stored using Chrome’s local extension storage.
  • Editor audio data may be stored locally in browser storage such as IndexedDB.

The Extension does not operate a cloud service for storing recordings.

6. Data sharing and transfers

We do not sell, rent, or trade user data. We do not transfer recordings, microphone audio, tab audio, settings, or recording metadata to third parties.

Data may leave your device only if you choose to do so — for example, by uploading a saved recording to another service, sharing a file, attaching it to an email, or moving it to cloud storage.

7. Advertising

Chrome Audio Recorder does not use user data for advertising. It does not use or transfer user data for personalized ads, retargeting, interest-based advertising, or advertising measurement.

8. Human access to user data

Because recordings and Extension data are stored locally on your device and are not uploaded to us, we do not have human access to your recordings or local Extension data.

If you contact us for support and choose to send screenshots, logs, sample files, or other information, we will use that information only to respond to your support request.

9. Chrome permissions used

Chrome Audio Recorder requests only the permissions needed to provide its recording, saving, editing, and management features:

  • tabCapture — capture audio from the active browser tab when you start a tab recording.
  • activeTab — access the active tab only as needed for the recording feature, such as identifying the current tab for recording or filename generation.
  • offscreen — process the recording in an offscreen document while the Extension records audio.
  • storage — save local settings, current recording state, and recent recording metadata.
  • downloads — save recordings to the Downloads folder and manage saved recording entries.
  • downloads.open — open a saved recording when you click the play/open action.
  • alarms — support the auto-stop timer feature.

The Extension does not request broad website access for unrelated purposes.

10. Microphone access

Microphone access is used only when you select the voice recording feature. The Extension does not activate the microphone unless you start a microphone recording or grant microphone permission for that feature.

11. Retention and deletion

Recordings remain on your device until you delete them. You can delete saved recordings from your Downloads folder or from any location where you moved them.

Recent recording entries and Extension settings may remain in Chrome’s local extension storage until you clear extension data or uninstall the Extension. Uninstalling removes Chrome extension storage, but it may not automatically delete audio files already saved to your Downloads folder.

12. Security

Chrome Audio Recorder is designed to process recordings locally. Since the Extension does not upload recordings to our servers, transmission of recording files to us does not occur.

If a future version introduces online features, this Privacy Policy will be updated before such data handling is introduced, and users will be informed as required.

13. Children’s privacy

Chrome Audio Recorder is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

14. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy if the Extension’s features, permissions, or data practices change. If we make material changes to how user data is handled, we will update this policy and provide any required disclosures through the Chrome Web Store listing or inside the Extension.

15. Chrome Web Store Limited Use disclosure

Chrome Audio Recorder’s use of information received from Chrome extension APIs and Google APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. This means:

  • We use data only to provide or improve the Extension’s single purpose: recording, saving, managing, and editing audio.
  • We do not sell user data.
  • We do not transfer user data for advertising or use it for personalized advertising.
  • We do not allow humans to read user data unless you explicitly provide it for support, it is required for security, or it is required by law.
  • We request only the permissions needed for the Extension’s disclosed features.
